Amazon. com key videoThe Man was one of the last great movie musicals of all studios, and this proved that rarest of events: a Broadway show that measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made musical debut – both live and on film – as "Professor" Harold Hill, the optimistic charlatan who promises to teach a small group of city boys from the "think system." But that's the part Preston was born in play and what it will always be remembered better. Composer Meredith Willson based The Man on its own small-town Midwestern childhood, around 1912, an almost mythical place where the old-maid librarian appears and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson entire score, which describes the combination of what are now the standards such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till You Was There "and show-specific numbers (" Trouble "," 76 trombones ") is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also bright and sunny and every July 4th in Iowa could ever hope. – Robert Windeler

Amazon. comAlthough was a Hungarian, Istvan Szabo, and deals with the history of Hungary as refracted through three generations of a Jewish-Hungarian family, you might be more inclined to give three hours of your life, if the approach David Lean film in the spirit. It is a picture-English, and the of Maurice Jarre score recalls the Doctor Zhivago. Szabó emulates Lean-style home for the merger of epic sweep of history with the crystalline detail the lives of people, so as to shape the destiny we saw through personal moments that feel at once evanescent and eternal. Lighting cameraman, Lajos Koltai, is one of the few filmmakers equal to taking these moments in lapidary images – cinematic of the highest order. "" is a literal translation of Sonnenschein, the family name of the central characters. And "Destiny" is a concept Sors, name three Sonnenschein offspring choose for themselves to fully understand issues as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The two brothers, Ignatz (Ralph Fiennes) and Gustave (James Frain)? Sister (by adoption) Valerie (Jennifer Ehle) is really their cousin. Both men love, and Ignatz rocks of ultratraditional family by taking as his wife. However, the Sonnenscheins and Sors enter the 20th century in loving solidarity, grateful to live in a liberal and tolerant regime. This is all swept away by the Great War, the rise of Nazism and its replacement, the new fascism of Stalinist Communism. Valerie survives them all – though I later played by Rosemary Harris, the mother of Ehle. For his – or parts – Ralph Fiennes continues to embody the next two generations of the Sonnenschein / Sors men, the proudly patriotic Adam and his son, the rudder Ivan, whose guilt over compliant prisoner at Auschwitz leads him to buy a passion puritanism of the Stalinist purges. Fiennes rises to the formidable challenge of creating three very different characters who all share the same congenital weaknesses and pain potential for greatness. This is an important film of beauty and sometimes shattering power. Even three hours is not enough to do justice to all the characters all turn recovery of history and politics and fairness. But the film is never less than gripping, and a report on "family values," well almost forever. – Richard T. Jameson

Amazon. comUniversal Studios hit box-office gold when they drafted vaudeville comedians and radio stars and Bud Lou Costello and transformed into one of the most successful screen teams of the 1940s and 1950s. The lackluster subplot is directed with some verve by Arthur Lubin, and energy of the film comes entirely from the lively by-play of the comedians and Costello of flustered and nervous -take physical comedy (including a hilarious rifle drill in which the out – of-step soldier marches to a different compass direction). The Andrews Sisters singing "You're lucky Fellow, Mr. Smith" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", among other things, the future stooge Shemp Howard shows where the "mess" in mess hall comes from as a cook the victim of misconceptions KP Costello.
